Tabriz is the center of Azerbaidjan province and is Iran's second center of trade and industry. Tabriz was found during Sassanid period and is located 597 KM north-west of Tehran. It has mild summer and very cold winters. The temperature drops often below -20 C during winter. Sahand mountain (3707 M) is located in the north of Tabriz. The population of Azerbaidjan province is around 5 million, 1.2 million of which live in Tabriz.

Tabriz is connected to Tehran via railway (736 KM) and highway (624 KM) and is very close to Djolfa the border city to North Azerbaidjan, Russia and Turkey. Situated on the Iran-Europe railway and highway, and bordering three neighboring countries is enough to make Azerbaidjan province and specially Tabriz city an important strategic point.
