GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

(PDF)

·  Mission

Cognitive Informatics (CI) is a cutting-edge and multidisciplinary research area that tackles the fundamental problems shared by modern informatics, computation, software engineering, AI, cybernetics, cognitive science, neuropsychology, medical science, systems science, philosophy, linguistics, economics, management science, and life sciences. CI is the transdisciplinary study into the internal information processing mechanisms and processes of the Natural Intelligence (NI) – human brains and minds – and their engineering applications in computing, ICT, and healthcare  industries.

The development and the cross fertilization between the aforementioned science and engineering disciplines have led to a whole range of extremely interesting new research areas known as CI and NI. The International Journal of Cognitive Informatics and Natural Intelligence (IJCiNi) encourages submissions that transcends disciplinary boundaries, and is devoted to rapid publication of high quality papers. The themes of IJCiNi are Natural Intelligence, Autonomic Computing, and Neuroinformatics. IJCiNi is expected to provide the first forum and platform in the world for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students to investigate cognitive mechanisms and processes of human information processing, and to stimulate the transdisciplinary effort on cognitive informatics and natural intelligent research and engineering applications.

·  Originality

Prospective authors should note that only original and previously unpublished manuscripts will be considered. Furthermore, simultaneous submissions are not acceptable. Submission of a manuscript is interpreted as a statement of certification that no part of the manuscript is copyrighted by any other publisher nor is under review by any other formal publication. It is the primary responsibility of the author to obtain proper permission for the use of any copyrighted materials in the manuscript prior to the submission.

·  Style

Submitted manuscripts must be written in the American Psychological Association (APA) editorial style [See APA-Template]. References should relate only to material cited within the manuscript and be listed in alphabetical order, including the author's name, complete title of the cited work, title of the source, volume, issue, year of publication, and pages cited. Please do not include any abbreviations. See the following examples:

·         Example 1: Single author periodical publication.

Smith, A.J. (2001). Information and organizations. Management Ideology Review. 16(2), pp. 1-15.

·         Example 2: Multiple authors periodical publication.

Smith, A.J., & Brown, CJ. (2001). Organizations and information processing. Management Source, 10(4), pp. J1-88.

·         Example 3: Books.

State author's name and year of publication where you use the source in the text as follows: (Brown, 2001;  Smith, 2000) or Brown (2001).

Direct quotations of another author's work should be followed by the author's name, date of publication, and the page(s) on which the quotation appears in the original text.

·         Example 1: Brown (2001) states that “the value of information is realized by most organizations (p. 45).”

·         Example 2: “In most organizations, information resources are considered to be a major organization asset (Smith, 2001, pp. 35-36)” and must be carefully monitored by the senior management.

For More information please consult the APA manual or refer to previous issues of the International journal of Cognitive Informatics and Natural Intelligence (IJCiNi) at http://www.igi-global.com/IJCCI or  http://www.enel.ucalgary.ca/IJCiNi/.

·  Regular Papers and Technical Correspondences

Interested authors of regular papers and technical correspondences are encouraged to submit their manuscripts to IJCiNi.  as an email attachment. The manuscript must be in MS Word or PDF format.  The cover page should contain the paper title, and the name, affiliation, address, phone number, fax number, and email address of each author. The second page should start with the paper title at the top and be immediately followed by the abstract.  Except on the cover page, the authors' names and affiliations must NOT appear in the manuscript. The abstract of 100-150 words should clearly summarize the objectives and content of the manuscript. For additional information, please consult the journal website at http://www.idea-group.com/IJCINI or http://www.enel.ucalgary.ca/IJCiNi/. The length of a regular paper should be around 20 to 25 double spaced pages, while that of a technical correspondence should be 10 to 15 double spaced pages.

·  Case Studies

IJCiNi publishes case studies based on real-world cases related to different issues and aspects encompassed in the themes of IJCiNi. Case studies must provide adequate information regarding the empirical work upon which the case is based, discussion of the issues involved, coverage of any experiments or trials of techniques or methodological approaches, and discussion of any lessons learned or conclusions drawn from the study. The length of a case study should be 10 to 15 double spaced pages.

·  Book Reviews

IJCiNi welcomes book reviews of either textbooks or professional books. Book reviews must not exceed 1500 words. Reviews should summarize the book and indicate the highlights, strengths, and weaknesses of the book. Reviews should evaluate the organizational and managerial applications of the material discussed in the book relevant to information resources and technology management. Reviews should critique and constructively evaluate the author's work and not merely list the chapters' contents. The writing style, accuracy, relevance, and the need for such a work in the discipline should be analyzed. The review must include the title of the book, author, publishing company, publication date, number of pages, cost (if listed), and ISBN number. Each submission must be accompanied by a short biography of the reviewer.

·  Review Process of IJCiNi

To ensure the high quality of published material, IJCiNi utilizes a group of experts to review submitted manuscripts. Each submission is reviewed on a blind basis by at least three members of the International Editorial Board of the journal.  A revised manuscript should be returned to the Editor in Chief with a statement that describes actions taken in the revision corresponding to the main review comments of referees. Revised manuscripts may be reviewed again by the original review panel with the addition of one new reviewer. Return of a manuscript to the author(s) for revision does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript for publication. The final decision will be based upon the comments of the reviewers and associate editors, upon their final review of the revised manuscript.

·  Copyright

Authors are asked to sign a warranty and copyright agreement upon acceptance of their manuscript, before the manuscript can be published. All copyrights, including translation of the published material into other languages are reserved by the publisher, Idea Group Inc. Upon transfer of the copyright to the publisher, no part of the manuscript may be reproduced in any form without written permission of the publisher, except for noncommercial, educational use such as for classroom teaching purposes.
